OUD – ARABIC MUSIC
Profile: With its pear-shaped body and fretless neck, the oud came to Europe from North Africa and resembles a guitar or lute. Even its name may be the source of the word ‘lute’. The oud was known in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt; of Middle Eastern origin, the oud is an important instrument of the Arab musical tradition, and there is a growing enthusiasm in the UK for learning and enjoying this unique Arabic music. The oud is a beautiful wooden instrument with a bent-back head and eleven strings; acoustic and electric instruments are now played.
